Cold weather is deceptive. You still sweat under layers, but you don’t feel as thirsty. People routinely undereat and underdrink in winter conditions because the cues are muted. Cold exposure can also raise the calories you burn keeping warm, though a well-layered hiker working hard generates plenty of heat on their own. Keep food and fluids accessible on winter outings, and don’t skip drinking just because the cold has muted your thirst.

Common fueling mistakes

Rehydrating post-activity is just as important as rehydrating during. Weigh yourself before and after a long outing if you’re curious about your sweat losses. Each pound lost means you need roughly 20-24oz of fluid to fully rehydrate, since some of what you drink will be excreted as urine before your body retains it. Eat well in the days leading up, have a solid breakfast the morning of, and bring more food than you think you’ll need. It’s always better to carry an extra bar home than to run out of fuel two miles from the car.

Start eating early in your activity, not when you already feel depleted. Small amounts consistently. Stay on top of hydration from the first mile. And don’t neglect salt on hot days.
